Booking a Medan car rental with driver for the first time? This is what a normal day looks like, using a Berastagi day trip as the example.

The evening before

Your driver sends a WhatsApp message confirming the pick-up time, the car's colour and the number plate. This is a good moment to share your plan for the day and any must-see stops.

07:00 – Pick-up

The driver waits in the hotel lobby or drop-off area. Luggage goes in the boot, water bottles are usually in the door pockets, and the air conditioning is already running.

07:30–09:30 – On the road

Leaving early avoids the queues on Jalan Jamin Ginting. Ask questions freely: drivers often explain the villages, crops and volcanoes you pass. If someone feels car sick on the bends, just ask for a short stop.

09:30 – Penatapan viewpoint

A classic stop for grilled corn and valley views. The driver handles parking on the busy roadside.

10:30–15:00 – Berastagi

Fruit market, Gundaling Hill and lunch. The driver waits with the car while you explore and can recommend halal or local restaurants.

15:30–18:00 – Back to Medan

Returning before the late-afternoon rush saves time. You are dropped wherever you like.

Etiquette in brief

  • The driver eats lunch separately unless you invite them; a meal allowance may be part of your arrangement.
  • Tipping is not required, but appreciated for great service.
  • Tell the driver about changes early so they can adjust the route.

Hours to keep in mind

The rental day is 24 hours, but the driver's working day has sensible limits. Long days should be agreed in advance to avoid overtime charges.

Ready to go?
