Lake Toba is the largest volcanic lake in Southeast Asia and a must when visiting North Sumatra. Parapat is roughly 170 km from Medan, and the sights are spread across many places: Parapat, Samosir Island, Balige and Sipiso-piso Waterfall. That is why a Medan to Lake Toba car rental is far more flexible than a bus or shuttle.

Route options from Medan

The Parapat route (most popular). Medan → Medan–Tebing Tinggi toll road → Pematang Siantar → Parapat. The drive takes about 4 hours depending on traffic and which toll sections are open. From Parapat you can cross to Samosir by ferry from Ajibata Port — the car can come with you.

The Berastagi route (more scenic). Medan → Berastagi → Kabanjahe → Sipiso-piso → Tongging or Simarjarunjung → Parapat. It is longer, but it crosses the Karo highlands and the best viewpoints over Toba from the north.

Comfortable vehicles for the Toba route

The roads to Toba have many climbs and bends. A vehicle with good power and suspension makes the trip far more comfortable:

  • Toyota Innova Reborn Diesel: plenty of torque, strong on climbs and economical over long distances.
  • Toyota Innova Zenix Hybrid: a quiet, comfortable cabin for families.
  • Toyota Fortuner GR Sport: high ground clearance, ideal for the Berastagi–Sipiso-piso route.
  • Toyota Hiace Premio: for office groups or large families.

City cars such as the Brio are best kept for the city, especially with a full load.

Sample 3-day itinerary

Day 1. Leave Medan in the morning for Berastagi. Stop at the fruit market and Gundaling Hill, then continue to Sipiso-piso Waterfall. Stay overnight in Simarjarunjung or Parapat.

Day 2. Cross to Samosir from Ajibata. Visit Tomok village, Huta Siallagan and Tuktuk. Stay overnight in Tuktuk.

Day 3. Return to Parapat, then drive back to Medan via Pematang Siantar, with a stop for Siantar's local food along the way.

Tips for a Lake Toba trip

  • Use a local driver. They know the ferry schedules, the best photo spots and the halal restaurants along the route.
  • Leave early. Fog often settles in the afternoon on the Berastagi and Simarjarunjung roads.
  • Count the days correctly. Multi-day rentals are charged per 24 hours from the pick-up time.
  • An All-In package is more practical for long trips because fuel, tolls and parking are included.
