Medan is the gateway to North Sumatra. From here, trips continue to Lake Toba, Berastagi and Bukit Lawang — or simply to business meetings in the city centre. Public transport exists, but for a busy schedule or a family group, car rental in Medan is almost always the most practical choice.

This guide covers the questions our customers ask most often: how much it costs, which vehicle fits, and what you need to prepare.

Typical car rental prices in Medan

The rate depends on the vehicle type, the duration and whether you use a driver. As a reference, these are the daily rates of the Medan Rent Car fleet:

Vehicle Capacity Rate / day
Honda Brio Satya 5 people Rp 350,000
Toyota Avanza / Raize 5–7 people Rp 400,000
Honda BR-V / Mitsubishi Xpander 7 people Rp 450,000
Toyota Innova Reborn Diesel 7 people Rp 600,000
Toyota Innova Zenix Hybrid 7 people Rp 700,000
Toyota Fortuner GR Sport 7 people Rp 950,000
Toyota Hiace Premio 15 people Rp 1,300,000
Toyota Alphard 7 people Rp 2,500,000

These are base vehicle rates. For an All-In package (vehicle, driver, fuel, tolls and parking) the price is adjusted to your route.

Choosing the right vehicle

  • In the city, 1–3 people: Brio or Raize. Economical and easy to park around Kesawan or Merdeka Walk.
  • Families and airport runs: Avanza, Xpander or BR-V. Room for 3–4 suitcases.
  • Long trips to Toba or Berastagi: Innova Reborn or Zenix. Their suspension is more comfortable on climbs and winding roads.
  • VIP guests and corporate events: Alphard or Fortuner, with a protocol-trained driver.
  • Groups of 10 or more: Hiace Premio or Isuzu Elf.

With a driver or self-drive?

Most visitors from outside the city choose car rental with a driver. Local drivers know the rush hours on Jalan Gatot Subroto, the alternative routes to Kualanamu and the restaurants worth stopping at on the Toba route.

Self-drive is available to registered corporate customers or individuals who pass document verification and an eligibility check.

Car rental requirements in Medan

Individuals should prepare:

  1. A valid ID card (KTP) or passport
  2. A driving licence (SIM A), for self-drive only
  3. An active social media account for verification

Companies and institutions need a business licence (SIUP/NIB), the company tax number (NPWP) and an official purchase order.

Tips to avoid extra charges

  • Book one day ahead, or three days ahead for VIP vehicles such as the Alphard, so the vehicle is guaranteed.
  • Understand the overtime rule. At Medan Rent Car, extra time is charged at 10% of the daily rate per hour. More than 5 hours counts as a full day.
  • Check the cancellation policy. Cancelling more than 2 days ahead is free. Cancelling 1 day ahead incurs a 50% deduction of the deposit.
  • Photograph the vehicle at handover, especially for self-drive rentals.

Choose your dates on the homepage, pick an available vehicle, enter your details and pay by virtual account, QRIS or e-wallet. You do not need an account. The vehicle is reserved as soon as payment is confirmed, and your driver will contact you before pick-up.
