Tomok and Huta Siallagan are the two best-known cultural villages on Samosir. A visit plan, etiquette and how to manage your time with a rental car.
Tomok and Huta Siallagan offer a glimpse into the life and history of the Batak Toba people. With your own car you can see both in half a day.
Tomok
Tomok is the first village you reach after leaving the ferry. Here you will find:
- King Sidabutar's tomb, a stone sarcophagus of the Sidabutar clan's ancestors
- The Sigale-gale puppet performance, moved in time with traditional music
- A souvenir market with ulos cloth, wood carvings and Toba T-shirts
Huta Siallagan
About 20–30 minutes from Tomok, Huta Siallagan is known for its stone court chairs, once used by customary elders. Traditional houses stand in neat rows inside a stone-walled compound.
Visiting etiquette
- Use a local guide to understand the history correctly.
- Respect the tombs and places considered sacred.
- Buying souvenirs directly from residents supports the village economy.
Managing your time

- Midday: King Sidabutar's tomb and Sigale-gale
- Afternoon: Huta Siallagan, then check in at Tuktuk
With a rental car, moving between sites is quick and you do not need to negotiate local transport again and again.
