Distance
Parapat, the main gateway on the lake's eastern shore, is roughly 175 km from Medan. Samosir Island lies across the water from Parapat and Ajibata.
Route 1: toll road via Siantar (fastest)
Medan → toll road to Tebing Tinggi → towards Pematangsiantar → Parapat.
- Travel time: about 4–5 hours including a short break
- Road: mostly straight toll and national road, then hills after Siantar
- Best for: reaching the lake quickly, catching a ferry to Samosir the same day
Route 2: via Berastagi and the Karo highlands (scenic)
Medan → Berastagi → Kabanjahe → Merek → Sipiso-piso → Simarjarunjung → Parapat.
- Travel time: a full day with stops
- Road: winding mountain road with viewpoints
- Best for: travellers who want waterfalls, volcanoes and lake panoramas on the way

Getting onto Samosir
From Ajibata, the car ferry crosses to Tomok in about an hour. Passenger boats from Parapat run to Tuktuk. You can also reach Samosir by road over the bridge at Pangururan via the Sidikalang–Tele route.
